Purpose Before Profit

A social enterprise is a business that trades like any other business, but they exist specifically to make the world a better place. They do this by practicing a For-Purpose business model. The social enterprise sector is a growing part of our economy and in 2023 it was estimated to employ about the same number of people as the mining industry.

The Data Conversation is contributing to this movement from within the community services sector. We are working to make data more accessible and more diverse by developing a Path to Better Data.

What it's like to be small

In the first 12 months of this consultancy, one of the big things I noticed was that small charities and organisations are at risk of being left behind. Struggling to keep up with increasing data reporting requirements associated with funding, they don’t have the economy of scale that large organisations do to invest in upgrading their data systems.

We are working on developing a path for small organisations to access the data infrastructure they need to stay in the race.

Bias in Data Design

There is a growing movement of data developers around the world talking about bias in data design; in particular, gender-bias. Bias in all data structures starts at the design stage. This is true from sophisticated AI software to the small-scale data project for a local community organisation.

We are working on developing a path for individuals from under-represented communities to join the data-development workforce.
