Purpose

Clean, order, and analyse available data.

This can include open administrative data at the state or federal level, as well as local client data.

Principles

Analyses need to be useful, basic descriptive statistics that are meaningful for the general public. This involves putting analysis and interpretation into context of the community’s stories.

Use this foundation to:

  • identify analysis to conduct
  • use the data in an accurate and appropriate way
  • engage with the Data Communicator what the messages are

Audiences

Purpose

Use relational database structure to develop user-friendly front-ends.

Principles

Need to be comfortable with the concepts of relational database; objects, tables, fields, etc.

Use this foundation to:

  • Edit or develop Page Layouts
  • Apply Field Security
  • App design and build
    • test early prototypes with the client
  • Custom Object design and build

Audiences

  1. Small Organisations

Purpose

Develop data visualisations that are clear and informative, in a way that makes sense to the audience

Principles

Simple is best. Needs to be effective for the audience, not complex and ‘clever’.

Use this foundation to:

  • develop online reports and dashboards
  • develop static charts for client’s use
  • engage with the organisation to learn what they need

Audiences

  1. Small organisations for program managers, boards or peer organisations
  2. Broader community or public distribution
  3. Government or for advocacy work

Purpose

Develop key messages from a collection of data analyses, for Fact Sheets, Community Profiles, or advocacy reports.

Principles

  1. The messages need to be appropriate for the audience.
  2. The messages need to be considerate of the context of the community that the data is about.
  3. The messages need to be accurate with respect to that context.
  4. The stories around the numbers need to be integrated into the key messages.

  • develop content
  • engage with community to learn what they need

Purpose

Work with organisations to develop a way of measuring the impact of their work, AND a way to capture that data that works with their day-to-day processes.

Principles

Practical Design.

Good principles in the real world context; Identify what the organisation needs to know or show, and how can they measure that in a way that will be sustainable.

Use this foundation to:

  • develop framework
  • operationalise that into a recording system that is practical within their daily activities
  • engage with organisation to help them integrate it into their day, both recording the information and also reviewing the data

Purpose

To connect with communities that will be part of a data project. Discuss with them the purpose and scope of the data project, to develop a shared understanding of priorities and processes.

Principles

Connect with the community knowing that they are the experts of their world.

Use this foundation to:

  • engage with community to learn what they want and need
  • engage with community to provide them the information they ask for

Audiences

Purpose

Develop and deliver training to a range of audiences to improve their access and application of data.

Principles

Provide information in a way that makes sense to the audience so that they can interpret and apply data findings correctly. 

Use this foundation to:

  • develop content for
    • short presentations (10 minutes to 1 hour),
    • social media communications,
    • an online course.
  • engage with community to learn what they need
  • test early prototypes with community to see if it’s working
  • engage with community to share and teach ideas and concepts (deliver content)

Purpose

Synthesise practical steps that the audience can put into action without great cost.

Principles

The level of information that the audience can apply in their real world, to improve the security of their data and devices.

Use this foundation to:

    • social media communications,
    • an online course.
  • engage with community to learn what they need
  • test early prototypes with community to see if it’s working
  • engage with community to share and teach ideas and concepts (deliver content)
